Under the reign of Emperor Ashoka the state of Orissa became one of the major centers of Buddhism in India. In Dhauli hill you can see statues of lions who represents the place where, after witnessing the carnage of Kalinga War, Emperor Ashoka relinquished war and adopted Buddhism.
